Sleeping in a castle in the Loire Valley: Les Sources de Cheverny
We're off to a strong start. After visiting the castles and seeing how the French nobility looked after themselves, you're sure to want to feel like one of them. Nothing could be easier: sleeping in a castle in the Loire Valley is possible. We did it on our first trip, we stayed at Les Sources de Cheverny , very close to the Château de Cheverny, the one from Tintin . Well, actually we stayed at the Château de la Tour du Breuil , but it has changed its name since then.

Did you know that…?
The word château in French refers both to castles as such and to palaces. That is why the Châteaux de la Loire are so far removed from the castles one imagines, despite being translated as such… Was it a mistake by the first translator?
We are in a castle-palace built in the 18th century and converted into a hotel at the end of the 20th century. At one time or another it was the property of marquises and counts, so it cannot be said that you are not treated like a nobleman. The rooms on the upper floor are in the attic – but don't think you will have to bend your head, they have very high ceilings – the common areas look like museum rooms with their decoration and the breakfast gives you strength to continue visiting the valley. We were left wondering if the fireplace in our room was decoration... the number of chimney vents on the roof made us think it was real.

But don't think that just because it's from the 18th century and decorated with some period furniture, it's stuck in the past. Flat screens, Wi-Fi and bathrooms with all the comforts of the 21st century. Plus a spa area – which we didn't even have time to try with so many castles – and a restaurant. You can see the prices and availability here . We already warned you that it's not particularly cheap... but that's what it means to feel noble in the Loire Valley.

The hotel Le Clos d'Amboise: another charming château
We continue to enjoy the luxuries of centuries past in the charming hotels of the Loire Valley . This time we are talking about a 17th century mansion with a name that recalls a neighbouring castle. It is Le Clos d'Amboise and the neighbouring castle is none other than Clos Lucé, the last resting place of Leonardo da Vinci , less than a kilometre away – you won't have to go far to visit the royal castle of Amboise either .
