Absynthe Minded's second album, New Day, is probably most notable for featuring the song My Heroics, Part One which was voted Best Belgian Song of the Decade by StuBru listeners, however it also contains a number of often overlooked gems. New Day is a long album, 16 tracks in total, and I sometimes realise there are songs on it I forget about completely but really love when I hear them. Cascade is good example of this, as well as Clock Is Ticking. As for my personal favourites, I've always been a big fan of Fortune and I Don't Buy It (which has such a long and quiet beginning, I once spoke to someone who thought the track was broken because nothing happened. Mary's Hotel is also great (So great I named a website after it). All three are big, bold, rocky sounding songs, yet still managing to prominently feature Hammond organ, piano and violin. I'm not all about the violin though (anyone who knows me, knows that's a lie) I Like You When You're Sad is so beautiful with its mournful trumpet solo and bitter-sweet lyrics. What are your favourite and not so favourite parts of New Day? Discuss the album here.

Unfortunately, like with most people and the bands they listen to there's often that one album that never really does it for them and this is the case for me with New Day. Now don't get me wrong, that's not to say i don't like the album because there's a handful of great songs, most of which are mentioned above. Possibly due to the fact there actually is 16 tracks I'd say this is definitely the album I skip most when shuffle decides to play one of them. It's a toss up between "Mary's Hotel" and "I Like You When You're Sad" for my favourite track on the album, which is probably strange given the contrast in the two songs. A quantity versus quality album perhaps. An extra point however for the album cover which features the coolest bass player in the word wearing a tea cosy on his head and a pair of sunglasses...

Give it another chaaaance. It often comes up on shuffle and I realise how much I underestimate it. The second half of the album especially. I find that listening to the live versions makes me appreciate them more. One Way Or Another and its really long violin solo is stunning. And I defy anyone to dislike I Don't Buy It once the opening with Jan fallen asleep on D finishes! Try it again, do itttttt.

To be honest i think part of why i find myself skipping the songs is because i had that weird version of the album in which songs would repeat the intro at the end of the song, but it's all fixed now. I should probably sit down and give it a good once through without silly versions.
